But My Problems Aren’t That Bad, I Don’t Need Therapy

How many times have we said that to ourselves? Dismissed our own problems, pain or discomfort? It comes from a good place, we’re trying to protect ourselves. But it’s only a short-term solution. Distraction and avoidance can only work for so long.

Therapy helps by getting to the root of the problem, however big or small. Therapy is about giving you the confidence to manage your pain, your discomfort, your challenges in a way that doesn’t detour you from your goals. If we can get acquainted with our pain and feel less scared of it, it won’t have the power to take over day to day.

You are deserving of therapy. Lots of us were taught to just “grin and bear it” and “don’t talk about your feelings with others”. Again, these are temporary solutions. They might help us distract for a moment but that moment turns into endlessly scrolling social media, bingeing TV, self-medicating, or overeating.

The brain and body connection is profoundly complex. it’s built up out of billions of neurons with trillions of connections. We can’t simply “stop worrying, calm down”. If we could…we would be doing it! If you break a bone, you go to a doctor, if you want to do well in school you get a tutor. If you want to support yourself with better managing whatever challenges you have, you get a therapist. It does not mean you failed, it means you are know you are worthy of more. If those challenges weren’t holding you back, what would life be like?
